The Violatos mill was a steam mill in the municipality of Brăila, built according to the plans of Anghel Saligny and inaugurated in 1898. The building is on the list of historical monuments in Brăila County. The Violattos family came to Brăila at the beginning of the 1800s, dealing with the grain trade from the beginning. After a short period of collaboration with another family of Greek origin – the Millas – Panait Violattos opened his own bread factory. His goal was to build the most modern mill in South-Eastern Europe. The construction was erected on the bank of the Danube on a structure made of wooden pillars connected by concrete elements. The six floors are made of brick with concrete floors. The mill had an automatic system for unloading barges directly into the warehouses of the factory, which occupied two of the six levels. The system operated through a brick tunnel in a circular arch that also contained a water supply pipe from the Danube and an escape channel.
